Emerald, The Scourge of the Dark Magician

Emerald, The Scourge of the Dark Magician

Emeralds

Emerald has long been associated with Fairy Tales, Kings and knights of ancient folklore. The jeweled crown of the wise ruler is always spoken of in bedazzled sighs of diamonds and emeralds. One look at the Royal Crown collection of England will attest to the facts.

They are indeed, quite shiny.

Emeralds did not only find favor with the Royals, however. The normies of the day found that carrying the rough cut pieces gave the carrier additional equilibrium in body and mind. It seemed to lift his spirits, put a skip in his step, and bring about good luck. Emeralds in any form, given as a gift, was a sign of wishing the other well, with a deep and true sentiment. Real abundance being the joy of everyone doing as well as you are! (or, y’know, mostly.)

friends sharing wealth

Emeralds are thought to be a crystal of wisdom, which may be one of the reasons it associated with those presumed to hold and bestow knowledge. It also is said to imbue one with the gift of discernment, helping to open the heart to what is true or false, and amplifying the intuition, when faced with a tough decision.

Emerald, is of course, associated with drawing wealth, but also with sharing it, as some other crystals, like citrine, are not. It is an important stone in science and healing, as it provides insight, patience, perseverance, and curiosity.

Folklore found that emerald was the enemy of enchanters. It gave one a supernatural ability to foresee the future, was used as an antidote to poison, and was feared by Dark Magicians, as the emerald brought truth to light and their sorcery was of no avail in the presence of one wearing or carrying the emerald. The wearer was said to be protected from attacks by venomous creatures, and evil spirits would be driven away.

A rough emerald is not so beautiful to look upon, and you may shrug off it’s potential in favor of something more dazzling, but do not be fooled. The energy of an uncut emerald is actually much stronger than one that has been manipulated, although the green rays of light that may filter through a cut gem has a magic all it’s own.

Always make sure that your stones or crystals are authentic, ethically sourced, and not man made. It’s best to go to a shop (assuming you are in a Country where that is still possible!) and

tough and see the stones for yourself. A rough, pocket piece may do you a world of good!!! They are lovely things to behold, and the action of simply feeling the feeling that the stones are traditionally said to impart, like openheartedness, can bring the actual experience of it up into your reality, and that, is magical!

The Wonderful Walnut Tree

The Wonderful Walnut Tree

One of the most amazing plants I have met this year is the wonderful walnut tree. There is a giant of a creature right in my back yard, and to my delight this last Autumn, it showered me with the means to enjoy food, medicine, stains, tinctures, hair dye, and so much more! I woke up every morning and gathered them up in cloth nets, in a territory bid with the local wildlife. The hulls and nuts themselves are incredibly hard, and although I looked carefully, I saw no tiny tools, and I still don’t know quite how other creatures manage to extract the sweet meat, but apparently they have secrets.

I moved to SW Missouri last September, with a Zombie Emergency Response Team sticker in my window, and dreams of an Ozark adventure and a house in the Countryside. That didn’t exactly happen, (yet) but I was lucky enough to meet a colorful, seasoned local, at a bookstore, who was happy to share his wisdom of the land with me, including the many uses of the local trees and other medicinal and edible plants.

I discovered that the large green balls that were the vexation of many Missourians in the suburbs could be gathered up and put to good use. It’s another one of those pesky and contentious points of perspective, those who curse them as a seasonal nuisance, and those who run around like crazy walnut squirrel people, gathering them from parks and the front yards of strangers. The actual nut is inside of the shell, which is inside of the green part, which is the hull. These are things I did not know.

The American walnut tree, or Juglans nigra, the American Black Walnut tree is found from Southern Ontario to South Dakota to Georgia, Northern Florida, and Southwest Texas. The most black walnut tees are to be found in Missouri, (over 59 million of them!).

green walnuts

Black walnut is an important tree commercially, as the wood is a deep brown color and easily worked. Walnut seeds (nuts) are cultivated for their distinctive and desirable taste. Walnut trees are grown both for lumber and food, and many cultivars have been developed for improved quality wood or nuts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juglans

What are Walnuts Good For?

I learned that the green hulls could be made into a tincture by washing them, carefully splitting, and packing into a sterile mason jar with vodka or other grain alcohol. Shake it up every once in a while, and after at least 30 days, strain the liquid into dropper bottles. Take 15-20 drops 3x’s a day for a variety of conditions.

The hulls are used to help with many conditions, as they contain high tannin and juglone content and are thought to oxygenate the blood and kill parasites. Black walnut is known as an effective anti-viral and is used to remove warts, which are caused by viruses. Black walnut is an anti-fungal, and anti-viral, and often used historically for many parasitic issues and stomach ailments. The bark is a gentle laxative, and the leaves have an astringent effect that could probably translate into an acne care regime, or deodorant base.

The meat of the black walnut contains the highest amount of protein of any tree nut. They are a good source of manganese, omega 3’s, a wide array of vitamins and anti oxidants-making it a super food that is not hard to acquire, or to prepare. Walnuts lend a delicious taste to just about anything, from cookies, to sauces, syrup, salads, and just too many choices to list them all! Get creative in the kitchen with your own nuts.

some of the tinctures I made from the walnut hulls

The active ingredients which are the most controversially discussed and debated are the naturally occurring tannins and juglone, found in the hull. Although I have seen a few websites stating that it could be dangerous, I cannot find any evidence to support that. Horses and dogs cannot tolerate it, but I see no evidence that it isn’t safe for humans, in moderation. Modern Pharmacology it seems, is often hellbent on dissuading people from natural medicines that have been used successfully for thousands of years. It is my opinion that both philosophies have a place on the shelf, and could benefit one another, with proper respect and education.

How do you remove the Hull?

The hulls are a lot of fun to remove. I have seen videos of people running them over in cars, using gigantic drills in a bucket, having family driveway boot stomps, and science types, with sharp, expensive knives, carefully carving off only the most pristine greeness for use.

I chose to stomp off the hulls of the ones I set aside to eat, and use a clean indoor hammer and chisel for the very nice green ones to be used as tincture and dye. The same clean tools seem to work best to also remove the meat from the inner shell. Once clean and dried, they can be stored in temperate conditions all year. When the kids get bored in the winter, give them a hammer and a bag of walnuts, they’ll be entertained all afternoon. (Maybe.)

or, be an old guy, and run them over with your golf cart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnOIF8M6lWQ.

use a clean, indoor set of tools to crack your shells

I liken them to cleaning and eating blue crab. It’s not easy, but well worth it, and although they are slightly high in calories, after the gathering, sorting, de hulling, cleaning and cracking, I think it’s an even trade.

Please use your nuts responsibly.

Labradorite, Guardian of the Dreamworld

Labradorite, Guardian of the Dreamworld

Labradorite is a mystical and magical stone that entrances all who gaze upon it.  It’s deep flashes of intense blues, violets, and gold, has been the source of folklore and imagination for time untold. Called the Merlin Stone, the Keeper of the Void, The Night Watchman, and my favorite, Guardian of the Dream World. Maybe because it reminds me of Guardians of the Guardians of the Galaxy…A movie who’s unlikely hero, actually embodied some of the more playful aspects of this elusive mineral.

Labradorite is a type of feldspar. It commonly appears to be bright bluish-green, to violet or yellow, but in actuality, has no color of it’s own. Fissures in the structure reflect and bend light, giving it the signature luminescent ethereal glow, also known as the Schiller effect, or more commonly called labradoressence. Inclusions of copper or hematite can create a spectrum of flash. Like emerald, it can be dull and opaque, or clear and gemmy. Labradorite is a calcium aluminum silicate, found in many locations around the world, including Canada, Madagascar, China, Russia, India, Austalia, and the U.S. Oregon, USA has some amazing specimens come out of it, and a rare full rainbow flash type called spectrolite, can only be sourced from Finland.

Labradorite value is dependant on the size, color, depth of color, clarity, and rarity. A very transparent piece of several carats with intricate depth and color could be quite expensive!!

Happily, labradorite is not only beautiful, it is also relatively affordable. A little blue flash can inspire a lot of joy! Most Gemstone and Metaphysical shops will carry labradorite, due to it’s classic appeal, it sells itself.

According to tradition, physically, labradorite is associated with the health of the blood, kidneys, and bones. It is said to break up blockages and get things moving, much as it’s spiritual nature would suggest. It helps us to be more extroverted and surefooted in a variety of situations. Labradorite encourages us, through heightened intuition and a breezy sense of fresh confidence, to step forward, and show our inner warmth and wisdom.           https://youtu.be/OJz0vNpP14A

Traditions

Labradorite is a legendary crystal that awakens the young adventurer inside of us all. It helps us to think for ourselves, walk our path of intuition and self knowledge, and optimistically venture into independence with a strong sense of being guided and protected, against all danger, seen, and unseen. I like to think of it as being represen tative of the Magician, Merlin, as a youth. I can see him full of untapped power and noetic wisedom, running too fast, laughing too loud, and yet unsheathing his sword without hestitation, when honor requires.

I also liken labradorite to the Yin compliment to moonstone, which is not to imply that labradorite is strictly masculine, just that it tends to embody the equalizing aspects. Like most good pairings, they compliment similarities, but create a more complex effect in the totality of their unique qualities combining.

On a metaphysical level, labradorite is often refered to as a protection stone. This, for it’s reputation as a guardian of the night. Labradorite will watch over you while your spirit travels in the dreamworld, and see you safely home. It accelerates your spiritual growth by activating not only your third eye, but your ability to get over social conformity, and say, “yes!” to your true desires, however freakish or staunch they really are. You are unique, and no one is served by a Magician who hides his Light for fear of conflict or social change

Because labradorite is such a stunning stone, it is quite popular, and comes in a variety of colors and grades. It is not hard to acquire, and there are few fakes, as the real thing is quite beautiful and plentiful enough for anyone who feels drawn to create a new reality, can have a pocketful of minor magic

As always, check your sources, and make sure you are talking to a reputable stone seller, especially now, with so many items being sold online. Buying in person, whenever possible, is always going to be your best bet. At Naked Fairy Apothecary, I create synergistic combinations for intentional health and happiness. Below are a few that contain labradorite. I can also offer most crystals and stones by themselves, in a bracelet or necklace, as a single point, or in a tensor or organite design.
