How Do Crystals Work?
Crystals and gemstones have been in use by humans on this planet for time imemorable. Although gemstones are universally admired and coveted for their inherant beauty and rarity, many cultures over the years have ascribed to them unique qualities and interactive attributes. Much of the rich superstition and folklore is currently starting to blend with known science, as the elements become better understood, and our concepts of the exchange of subtle energies become something we can begin to measure and understand. Everything has an energetic frequency and vibration. Everything. Lesser knowledgable people ascribed these exchanges in language that they understood, and in the story telling rituals of handing down information to subsequent generations. Wise men and women over the ages have catalogued and inventoried each mineral and element, and through commonalities and cross referencing, we have evolved our own modern concepts.
Confirming whether or not crystals, orgonite, and gemstones have any real or specific effect on our physical, emotional, or spiritual well being is not the intention of Naked Fairy Apothecary. I am making designs based on the historical and traditional healing effects attributed by other peoples and cultures. Take what you like, and leave the rest. I am not a Doctor, a witch, or a witchdoctor. You can, however, call me a Fairie, and investigate the world of subtle energy and beauty for any reason that inspires you. I hope you find the world of minerals as fascinating and useful as I do.
Carnelian

The following is a brief description of some of the more common elements that I work with and some of their traditional attributes.
Amber
A golden yellow to cognac colored translucent gemstone. Amber is one of the earliest artifact items found to have been worn as jewelry, it is formed from prehistoric sap, and thus still contains succinic acid, on an atomic level, which has been said to reduce inflammation and discomfort. It is often recommended for speeding recovery from injury, seasonal depression, lifting the spirits in the elderly or affirmed, or relieving teething pain in babies.
Carnelian
A member of the micro silicate class of quartz, carnelian is a light orange to deep red colored, often banded, crystal. A favorite of ancient royal women, due to it’s sensual and erotic energy. Carnelian was equally favored by the regular folks. It was often called the Tradesman stone, as it was said to make the wearer more energetic, aware of their surroundings, and therefore less prone to accidents. Carnelian lends action to ideas, and is a great suggestion for pulling one out of a slump or emotionally apathetic phase.

Amazonite
A soft greenish blue with some light grey to taupe markings, this stone represents the warrior spirit of overcoming . We set boundaries and show up with courage in the face of being overwhelmed by demands and expectations. I fondly call it the Al Anon stone, as it helps us set healthy boundaries, and release the over developed need to fix others, or take on their burdens as our own.
Apatite (blue)
I use blue apatite in my Weight Loss design, and Clear Day necklace. The traditional actions of blue apatite are related to body image acceptance, actualizing life goals and coming to terms with your personal reality. It is also associated with better communication with animals and extra terrestrials. The atomic structure of apatite is similar to that of deer antlers, and as such, is also associated with strengthening teeth and bones.
Rose Quartz
Real rose quartz is not cotton candy pink, but it can make you feel that sweet. This pale rose to light lilac type of quartz is all about love. It’s said to help restore trust and harmony in all different kinds of relationships while improving their close connections. It’s also claimed to help provide comfort and calm during times of grief. It’s action encourages us to love ourselves, and thereby attract equal energy to what we are broadcasting from within. Physically, rose quartz is associated with the heart, circulation, and reproductive systems.

Clear Quartz
Clear quartz crystal is considered a “master healer.” It’s said to amplify energy by absorbing, storing, releasing, and regulating it. It’s also said to aid concentration and memory. Physically, clear crystals are claimed to help align all chakras, but specifically the crown, and balance out your entire body. Clear quartz is extremely versatile and when added to designs with any other element, will aid and enhance their abilities. Quartz is piezoelectric, meaning they create an electrical charge when mechanically stressed, or, they can send and receive electrical impulses known as emotions.
Bloodstone
Bloodstone is named after it’s dark red color, and reputation for being a blood tonic. Bloodstone is known for building strength, both physically and spiritually. It is associated with the heart, circulatory system, and menstrual cycle. It is also known to bring good luck and prosperity to the wearer, and courage in the face of challenges.
Smoky Quartz
Smoky quartz crystal is one of my favorite crystals in the quartz family. Known for blocking radiation, transmuting negative to positive energies, and lending quiet intelligence and quick decisions to intuitive action. Smoky quartz is popular as a protection talisman, especially to Lightworkers and the spiritually connected.
Onyx
A shiny black variety of chalcedony is another protection stone. It’s powers are said to be of great help in dangerous or predatory environments. Supposedly, the signature of onyx is offensive to unwanted advances and makes you invisible, or unattractive to potentially confrontational elements. It is a stone of good luck, and helps one to integrate spiritual information. Onyx is calming, and aids in sleep problems.
Obsidian
Obsidian is a black volcanic glass found all over the world. Ancient cultures used it to carve knives, figurines and arrowheads out of. It is a protection stone with a fiery, aggressive nature, that may or may not resonate with an individual. It is commonly carried to relieve grief and loss, or as a ward against being bullied or harassed. It is a type of psychic mirror, a little like hematite, in that respect.

Larimar
The stone of Atlantis lore, this beautiful element is only found in the Carribean ocean, and looks itself like a bit of ocean frozen in time. It’s magical and healing properties were spoken of by Edgar Cayce and others. It is most notable for bringing together soul mates or ones ‘soul family’, or pod of origin. On a practicle level, larimar aids communication, compassion, and forgiveness.
Ruby
A deep red gemstone, this highly valued crystal helps restore vitality and energy levels. This can help activate sensuality, sex, and intellect. It’s also said to help bring self-awareness and the realization of truth to one’s mind. Rubies were used in ancient times to help remove toxins from blood and improve the overall circulatory system.

Libyan Desert Glass
A soft yellow meteoric impact glass, this is the companion to moldavite, the only other potentially not of Earthly origin gem I know of. As such, it carries a very high vibration, and opens doors to higher dimensions and guidance. It resonates to the solar plexus, and helps one to understand yourself in relation to the Universe and the beings that inhabit it. I find that it gives me a little boost of Joy.
Howlite
This soft white mineral is often dyed to look like other things, mainly turquoise and malachite. In it’s natural form it has soft marbling veins and is extremely calming and anti anxiety provoking. It brings in collective hope and deep comfort. It tends to make some people actually sleepy. Recommended for bone and teeth issues, as well as releasing unfounded fears and low panic.
Jasper
Jasper is a slow moving stone with lasting effects. It comes in many colors, and is a variety of chalcedony. It is an Earthing energy, concerned with material and physical life, playfulness, family, and physical balance.
Jet
Jet is a very lightweight pitch black stone, often referred to as black amber due to the fact that it began as ancient driftwood. Jet is called The Gamblers Stone, helping to curb compulsive habits. It is also said to be helpful with stomach ulcers, and alleviating grief and sorrow.
Kunzite
Kunzite is frequently lilac or pink, and occasionally green (hiddenite). It is a lithium based mineral, and so it is useful for hormonal issues, mood swings, neurological imbalances, and emotional challenges. It is also associated with repairing romantic relationships.
Lapis Lazuli
Lapis is a shiny, deep blue crystal, shot with veins of pyrite on the high end, and calcite on the low. It is recommended for boosting the immune system, migraines in particular. Lapis pairs well with shungite and fluorite. It is a wishing stone, helping dreams come into actualization. Fine quality lapis originates in Afghanistan, and so is often called Aladdin’s stone.

Amethyst
This deep violet crystal is another “Master Crystal”, meaning that it goes to many sources of any issue, and also amplifies whatever element you put with it. Historically, Amethyst was the name of a Greek goddess that spurned the affection of Dionysus, the God of wine, who turned her to quartz. He cried great purple tears when he realized his error, and so the story relates amethyst as a remedy to help reduce alcohol abuse. It is also associated with higher spiritual development and intuition. Amethyst is worn to deflect environments high in radiation, and when warmed, absorbs the heat and emits a wide wave length infrared light frequency, applied and understood by modern science.
Citrine
Known as The Merchants Stone, citrine is most renowned for it’s association with wealth, prosperity, and personal confidence. It resonates to the solar plexus, and has a soft, buttery color. Most commercial citrine is actually heat treated amethyst, the lower quality being a burnt orange color. Citrine is great for getting over social anxiety, and having luck on your side in a legal battle or job interview.
Tigers Eye
Tigers eye transitions through three phases of development to become the beautiful amber striped stone we love. Tigers eye relates to truth, courage, transition, and seeing through contradictions. It inspires one to take calculated physical action, like a tiger. It stimulates co operation beween factions and helps to create balance, prosperity, and solutions.
Moonstone
Moonstone is a white to greyish crystal with blue flashes of feldspar, which tend to give it a lunar glow. It represents the nature of the Divine Feminine in all of us, the nurturer, guide, healer, and intuitive. Moonstone is said to help with hormone issues, and enhance psychic abilities and manifestation. It holds special significance for lovers, or those seeking their soulmate.

Labradorite
Labradorite is the Magicians Stone. Another feldspar based crystal, renowned for it’s association with all things enchanted. A beautiful dark rainbow of Labrador essence comes from deep within it, calling one to adventure and intrigue. It is the yang energy to moonstone, in a way, having all of moonstones psychic and intuitive qualities, with more bravado than consideration.
Moldavite
This green space gem is a mystery and a gift from the stars. It is a tektite, having arrived near the area of Moldova some 14.7 million years ago in what is now the Czech Republic. Moldavite is a uniquely powerful crystal, who’s action is removing obstacles, people places, and ideologies that no longer support your personal potential. Make sure that you are up for that, as well as a potential landslide of higher contact from other realms before you decide to work with it. Moldavite is perhaps the highest vibration element I have run across, and it is definitely not for the novice, or the trend follower. Because it looks a lot like green bottle glass, there are a lot of fakes and reconstituted items out there, so make sure you are buying from a verified shop or dealer who will authenticate it. Real moldavite is not cheap, and has some specific markers that can be identified.
Pietersite
An earth toned stone that represents the Storm element, it’s action is one of sudden upheavals and restructurings. It connects to quantum dimensions and is said to propel one into potential enlightenment and self actualizations. It creates a connection between the solar plexus and the third eye. Pairing pietersite with another action stone like moldavite or carnelian can really get things rolling-if, that is your intention.
Turquoise
This blue crystal has powers that are said to help heal the mind, body, and soul. It is another Master Element. Generally speaking, it’s seen as representational of honor, friendship and wisdom that can help balance your emotions while finding your spiritual groundings. When it comes to the body, it’s said to benefit the respiratory, skeletal, and immune system.

Petrified Wood
This wood frozen in time is formed over time as wood is buried and each cell becomes occupied by mineral deposits, most often a variety of jasper, but sometimes malachite or brilliant opals. It represents connection to the Earth, the Ancestors, the spirits of the forest and contains the wisdom of all it has observed. It is calming and centering in reality.
Malachite
This striated forest green mineral used to quite common, but has gone up in value and availability. Dyed fakes are quite common, so verify that your stones are authentic. Malachite was used in folklore to ward off all forms of evil, especially for small children. As adults, it tends to manifest quite strongly your desires. Unfortunately, many of our unconscious thoughts are not so great, but malachite doesn’t judge. So, a good choice for luck and love, if you aren’t prone to vengeance or selfish motives.
Sodalite
This navy blue and white stone, shot through with white calcite veins can often be mistaken for low grade lapis lazuli, but lapis is a very different blue, and has mica and pyrite veining. Sodalite is a dreamy, creative energy, also known for alleviating water weight or build-up. It is recommended for getting in touch with your ability to communicate freely, through writing, art, dance and music.
Emerald
This dark green beryl gemstone represents a pure energy of love and resonates directly to the heart chakra. Emerald is synonymous with abundance and prosperity, tempered with grace and compassion. Highly valued, cut and faceted specimens in their crystalline form can name their price. An excellent stone for Healers or Councelors for it’s mental and emotional stabilization effects. It aids in psychic abilities, and is good for the whole immune system.
Lepidolite
Another lithium based mineral, with a quirky sense of depth and purpose. Lepidolite is like the nice sister to labradorite. It will support your personal journey, inspiring connection with your guides, and etheric mentors, but at the same time, gently uplifting your mood and general disposition. Known to aid in helping stop bad habits, self defeating behaviors and negative self assessments.
Aquamarine
A protective, gentle, and guiding crystal that reminds one of the deepest seas. It invites protection for travel by sea, and all water related activities. Kind and truthful communication, empathy, emotional, written, and verbal communication are the message of this light blue stone. Traditionally used as a treatment aid for the throat and thymus. It stimulates the ability to communicate with love, activates the third eye, is useful as an aid to intuition, and the ability to completely understand a situation at a glance using only swift emotional radar
Adventurine
Adventurine is associated with the heart chakra. It is believed to not just energize the heart chakra, but to protect it from those who might want to cause you damage, or heartache. It is said to help make you emotionally resilient, decisive, a better leader or mentor. This stone is more than an attractor of luck, but one that aligns conditions so that the highest outcome is inevitable. Aventurine releases stuck patterns of behavior that hold you back from becoming your best self
Fluorite
This beautiful crystal comes in all the colors of the rainbow, with each corresponding to the chakra it codes with. Fluorite is a Master Crystal, going to the source of any issue. It is commonly called the Thinkers Stone, as it has the reputation for helping to focus mental business and unproductive thought loops. Fluorite is said to strengthen teeth and bones, and activate the third eye chakra.

Mookalite is a stone of happiness and enjoyment of life.
Jade
A well known micro crystal from the East, jade in it’s finest form is every bit as valuable as emerald, and shares many energetic qualities. It represents pure love, prosperity, happy coincidence, and the pure vibration of the heart. Nephrite, and jadeite are both jade, but the former is the more sought after. Jade carries the spirit of nature, so makes a great choice for someone who must spend a lot of time indoors.
Tourmaline
A known protection stone that vacuums away negativity and offers a comforting vibration as it clears away toxicity and purifies your space. Tourmaline is great for lessening anxiety, stress, and baseless worries. It resonates to the root or base chakra, and the Earth elements.
Shungite
A mystic stone that only exists near Lake Karelia in the Czech Republic, shungite is scientifically proven to de stabilize pathogens, by action of it’s unique atomic structure, called fullerenes. It amplifies and empowers whatever elements you pair it with, and is used for many healing modalities from soap to massage. Shungite is 90% pure carbon, and is great for blocking electronic pollution. Only 2% of the known shungite is elite noble, the highest quality, which is the only kind you should use in water, the remainder is beautiful and useful, but an industrial grade that must be polished.

Garnet
A garnet is a deep wine red crystal that magnetizes and draws healthy, non toxic love relationships, increases creativity and passion. It is worn or carried to enhance fertility, prosperity. Garnet is an energetic sacral crystal, inspiring action and confidence. Garnet is said to help one recall past lives, and take the moral high ground in matters of the heart.
Fuchsite
Also called ruby in fuchsite, this is known as the Empathic stone. It allows one to experience and extend compassion, without internalizing the grief or issues projected towards them. Although fuchsite is heart centered, it’s action seeks to aid you in releasing bonds o a toxic, obsessive or co dependant nature.

Hematite
A Hematite is the magic mirror of the self and shadow of self. It reflects back to you what you express in the world. Hematite is not naturally magnetic, but lends itself to the process. It is extremely grounding, a good choice for those with vertigo, or tinnitus. Hematite represents the warrior, and real hematite is various shades of dark grey, but will leave a red mark if you scratch it, as it is very heavy in iron. .
Herkimer Diamond
Herkimer diamond is not a diamond, but a particular, very water clear quartz. It is known as the Attunement Stone, helping one to adjust to the world around them, the changing energies, and inter dimensional nature of the current energy. Herkimer helps you to let go of past life issues, and things you have past the time of altering. It allows white light to come through from the crown chakra, and is recommended for E.T. interactions. Goes well with moldavite and labradorite.,

Peridot
Peridot, also called olivine, is a small, bright, luminous green. It is said that it contains all spiritual preaching and also miracles. Peridot is also a space rock, being a common element found in many meteorites. Peridot is also a heart gemstone with a clean high frequency, that encourages high forgiveness, and renews innocense.
How to Care For Your New Crystal or Item
When you first bring your crystal home, you’ll want to cleanse away any negativity it may have picked up. You can hold it under cold, running water from a tap or rinse it in a natural source of water. Make friends with it, introduce yourself, and send it a thought form of welcome. I encourage you to spend time with each mineral you acquire and get to know how it makes you feel or effects your environment. Use your intuition, and try not to wear or carry them all at once, not everything resonates well together, as each emits a specific frequency.
It is customary to burn sage to really help it get rid of unwanted energies. You can rinse it in cool water with an intention for clearing or resetting and leave it out to dry in the morning sunlight or moon light to let the energies filter through.
